Book Review of 'The Undomestic Goddess' by Sophie Kinsella

'The Undomestic Goddess' is a story that forces the reader to ponder what is more important in life: love or success or a balance of our love life, social life, family, and career. The writing is funny, romantic and at the same time also sends a subliminal message to its readers.

Ambitious workaholic attorney Samantha Sweeting has been on the path of success since she was a child. From getting good grades to working non-stop, she has landed herself in a job in the best law firm in Britain. Her life turns upside down when she discovers that she has made a mistake so huge that it has the power to destroy her career forever.

In this mess, she hastily leaves her office and boards the first train that she spots. Arriving in the middle of nowhere, her judgment and senses being completely clouded by the whole situation. In the confusion of the moment, Samantha is mistaken for an interviewee and finds herself being offered a job as a housekeeper in the English countryside. Her employers have no idea they’ve hired a lawyer and Samantha has no idea how to do anything domestic.

The story thereafter is a beautiful and perfect mix of humour, romance, and some parts drama. The character of Samantha is adorable. She is someone who will appeal to all contemporary women – some will choose to agree with her while some may strongly detest her, but I think all will agree that her character is quite relatable to contemporary working women. I enjoyed the sweet love story and seeing our main protagonist transition from city life to village life which was quite necessary I felt for her.

I love the message of the story that just because you have a big, high powered job and a big salary, doesn't mean you're happy. Life is too short to live to work, there are people around you who can make you happy and who care, and they're all that matters at the end of the day. It is the usual chick-lit story, easy to read with some funny moments thrown here and there. I recommend you enjoy it on a long weekend for a good laugh!
